MSc in Periodontics (Full Time 15 Months)

This Master's-level degree course in Periodontics is specifically designed for dental clinicians seeking to develop expertise in periodontology. This programme aligns directly with the General Dental Council (GDC) approved UK Specialty Curriculum in Periodontics. This programme provides learners with the theoretical knowledge, necessary to underpin clinical practice, required by a UK Specialist and aims to enhance participants’ abilities in confidently diagnosing, managing, and treating patients with periodontal disease. Through a learner-centred, practice-oriented approach, it empowers learners by enhancing their theoretical foundation and clinical proficiency (in a simulated environment) to allow them to provide high-quality care in the management of periodontal conditions.

Overview

Periodontal disease is one of the most prevalent oral health conditions globally and stands as the second leading cause of tooth loss. Its effects extend beyond the oral cavity, with a profound impact on systemic health and overall quality of life. As populations age and patients present with increasingly complex medical histories and risk factors, the presentation and management of periodontal disease demand advanced knowledge and clinical expertise.  This programme prepares clinicians to meet these challenges through a rigorous, evidence-based approach.

Clinical Skills

This Master’s programme offers dental practitioners the opportunity to:

  • Acquire a deep understanding of periodontal disease pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management.
  • Apply theoretical knowledge in a simulated clinical setting
  • Gain confidence and competency in advanced techniques taught in a simulated environment, under the direct supervision of expert faculty, ensuring the ability to deliver care at a specialist level.

Beyond Clinical Skills

In line with the requirements of the UK Specialty training curriculum, in addition to comprehensive training in periodontics, the programme develops and fosters the wider “non-technical” professional capabilities required of a Specialist, including:

  • Clinical research methodology and critical appraisal
  • Communication and patient interaction
  • Self-awareness and reflection
  • Leadership and clinical/practice management

Learning Objectives

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the full range of periodontal diseases and the supporting evidence base.
  • Be capable of delivering high-quality, evidence-based periodontal care
  • Apply critical thinking and clinical decision-making in managing periodontal conditions.
  • Communicate effectively and employ the essential non-technical skills required to lead in specialist dental care.
