Overview

Endodontic diseases are a major cause of tooth loss and clinical complications in dentistry. With increasing patient demand for tooth preservation, the ability to perform complex root canal treatments and manage endodontic failures has become an essential skill.  Early, accurate diagnosis and a deep understanding of pulpal and periapical pathologies are key to successful outcomes. This part-time programme prepares clinicians to meet these challenges through a rigorous, evidence-based approach.

Clinical Skills

The Master’s programme offers dental practitioners the opportunity to:

  • Develop a deep understanding of endodontic disease pathogenesis, diagnosis and management
  • Apply theoretical knowledge in a simulated clinical setting
  • Gain confidence and competency in advanced techniques taught in a simulated environment, under the direct supervision of expert faculty ensuring the ability to deliver care at a specialist level.

Beyond Clinical Skills

In line with the requirements of the UK Speciality training curriculum, in addition to comprehensive training in endodontics, the programme develops and fosters the wider non-technical professional capabilities required of a Specialist, including:

  • Clinical research methodology and critical appraisal
  • Communication and patient interaction
  • Self-awareness and reflection
  • Leadership and clinical/ practice management

The curriculum is aligned with GDC requirements, providing assurance and documentation that the above key competencies are covered appropriately.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the programme, students will be able to:

  • Accurately diagnose and manage the full spectrum of endodontic conditions
  • Be capable of delivering high-quality, evidence-based endodontic care
  • Apply advanced treatment planning strategies for complex cases

Exhibit leadership, critical thinking, and professional communication skills necessary for specialist-level practice.

Programme Format

Programme Structure and Learning Approach This Master’s programme curriculum is aligned with the GDC requirements ensuring that all key competences are covered appropriately. It follows a structured and progressive “spiral” learning model delivered part-time over 3 years where foundational concepts are reinforced and built upon layer-by-layer. The programme includes: • Core theoretical training through flexible online modules Delivered online one day per fortnight during term time (typically Friday or Saturday) with additional flexible self-study supported by COMD provided learning resources driving independent learning • Clinical application and skills development in simulated settings using advanced technologies A techniques course of 1-2 weeks is provided at the beginning of each year which delivers training on both routine and advanced techniques in a simulated environment. Combined with theoretical leaning, this equips you with the skills in instrumentation, techniques and case simulation and other advanced techniques to provide care for patients in your own clinical practice. For international students COMD provides support with visa application and accommodation arrangements for these blocks of ‘hands-on’ training. This stepwise approach allows students to master endodontic concepts before applying them in real clinical environments, ensuring confidence and competence at every stage.
